With a range of new marijuana products hitting the market every day, from transdermal patches to weed wines, it tends to be hard to keep up. Ever since California legalized medical marijuana in 1996, the cannabis industry has grown astronomically and it’s not expected to slow down anytime soon with the market expecting to hit 97.35 Billion USD by 2026.
With this expansive growth, cannabis enthusiasts like ourselves, are excited to test out the number of new products for the modern-day toker.
Today we are talking about one of the heaviest hitters that’s making waves in the industry. Yes, that’s right we are going to give you insights into the story of how Moon Rocks came to be.
When you smoke Moon Rocks for the first time, you better strap in for a ride because you’ll be in for a one-of-a-kind marijuana experience.
What Are Moon Rocks Weed?
The first marijuana moon rocks were originally created with the Girl Scout Cookies strain, but nowadays, moon rocks have been known to be made with any strain.
Moon Rocks are dank primo buds, around a nickel to quarter in width, that get sprayed or dipped in hash oil, live resin or rosin. They are finished off by rolling the hash caked bud in bright green or golden kief. So basically, Moon Rocks are a big nug cover in concentrate super loaded with THC kief.
If you’re a marijuana enthusiast and you’re breaking apart a Moon Rock for the first time, I like to compare it to a little kid opening their first present on Christmas morning. As you break apart the rock and feel the kief stick to your fingertips, you’ll see the layers of cannabis concentrates which you are about to smoke.
While each Moon Rock marijuana will be a little bit different based on the strain you use, here is one thing you can count on. Because it’s superload with three types of cannabis, your average moon rock nug will contain around 50%-52% THC—a staggering level that should leave even the most experienced smokers very pleased. However, Dr. Zodiak’s Moonrocks range even higher, from 60% to 99% THC.
So from now on, when you hear the term Moon Rocks, you can be sure that it is some type of cannabis concoction with hash oil, THC concentrate and kief. When you try marijuana moon rocks for the first time, you’ll want to check these best things to do when you’re high.
Moon Rock Nicknames: Caviar Gold, Cannabis Caviar, Caviar Buds, Weed Caviar, Kurupts or Dr. Zodiak’s
If you are 420 friendly and know the world of cannabis, then you know in marijuana culture there are generally nicknames for the most popular products and cannabis concepts.
That being the case, it should be no surprise to you that, like most things regarding cannabis, moon rocks are not the only name for this wonderful invention. One of the most popular and perhaps most appropriate nicknames for this is heavy hitter is cannabis caviar or caviar weed. However, you’ll hear people refer to moon rocks as Kurupts, Dr. Z’s or Dr. Zodiak’s because they were the first duo to put Moon Rocks on the maps.
While the name Moon Rocks, cannabis caviar, caviar gold and caviar weed are generally used as synonyms, some people refer to marijuana buds sprayed with hash oil without kief as cannabis caviar. So next time, when you hear one of these nicknames, you’ll know that it is a nug that packs a powerful punch. Frankly, either way, it’s a great idea and you won’t want to miss out.
The Origin of Moon Rocks & How the Name was Created
The first use of cannabis was recorded somewhere between 2000 BC – 500 BC. For centuries, people have smoked it, burned it, vaped it, ate it, turned it into a concentrate and so on.
The concept of Moon Rocks weed really takes cannabis to a new different level. So how did this wonderful idea come to life? Watch this video below from the O.G. Founders of Moon Rocks-Kurupt & Dr. Zodiak.
Marijuana and hip-hop has always been closely related and has a major influence on culture. So it’s no surprise that Moon Rocks were originally founded by Kurupt, the former Executive VP for Death Row Records and Tha Dogg Pound alumni, and musician artist Dr. Zodiak.
Kurupt first met Dr. Zodiak at a Cage vs. Cons event held at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in 2013. The relationship started out focusing on a music project and mixtape, but it has now flourished into a full fledged business partnership.
In 2014, Kurupts and Dr. Zodiak’s Moon Rocks were launched and along with it, a “Moon Rocks Project” mixtape to help spread their new marijuana innovation. With 23 tracks and major appearances like Kendrick Lamar and Wiz Khalifa, this mixtape helped bring Moon Rocks to the forefront of cannabis culture.

The two didn’t stop promoting Moon Rocks there. In late 2016, they launched another major mixtape MoonRock Mixtape Volume 2 with the biggest hip-hop names out there including Snoop Dogg, T.I, Young Thug, Lil Wayne, Schoolboy Q and Birdman.

Brands of Moon Rocks
KURUPT & Dr. Zodiak’s Moon Rocks
Well, if we are talking name brand names here, the original recipe still belongs to Kurupt and Zodiak. That’s why you tend to hear people refer to them as either Kurupt’s Moon Rocks or Dr. Zodiak’s Moon Rocks over any others.
Dr. Zodiak was quoted that the potency of their product is what separates their Moon Rocks weed from any of the other competitor’s marijuana products. They proclaim their Moon Rocks to be “The Strongest Bud In Your Galaxy.”
“When you hit a Moonrock, it’s going to be like drinking Jack Daniel’s or taking a shot of 151 Bacardi,” Dr. Zodiak says, “A shot of 151 is a lot more strong and intense and you’re going to feel it immediately. That’s a good way to compare Moon Rocks to just normal weed. It’s twice as strong and it’s going to put you on your ass.”
The original Kurupt Moon Rocks use the super strain OG or Killer OG, but that was only the very beginning. They continued to partner up with other rappers affiliated with the Wu-Tang Clan such as Ghostface Killah and Killah Priest.
Atomik 420 Moon Rocks
That said, the world of pot licensing isn’t exactly airtight, and there are plenty of variations of similar products out there. Atomik 420 is another company known for making Moon Rocks. They claim to have developed Moon Rocks in 2013 which is in the same timeframe as Kurupt and Dr. Zodiak.
Atomik 420’s intergalactic ganja comes in many different forms to satisfy your many different cannabis needs testing at 55% THC and 40% CBD. Their Moon Rock product line varies from Diamond, Ice, Gold, Elite, Klear, NRG, Gold and CBD.
Atomik has a unique CBD strain that comes in at 40.57% CBD and 12.66% THC. A strain perfect for chronic pain, body soreness and insomnia.
There are more types of moon rocks out there, but none as popular as these two brands from the West Coast. If you walk into a dispensary anywhere in the country you will probably find a home strain version created in-house or by a regional business.
Kaviar Moon Rocks
Kaviar is a newer brand of Moon Rocks and cannabis moon rock infused cones. Kaviar claims that they’ve developed “an amazing line-up of artisan, made from scratch concentrates and infused cones.” On their site, they mention that their plants and their flowers are sustainably grown, and mixed with the highest concentrated oil that the marijuana industry has to offer.
They have two main products which they are known for; Kaviar Cones & Kavir Moonrocks.
Their cones are made up of freshly ground, high THC flower and infused with hash oil while being rolled in kief. Each pre-roll joint or cone comes with a top of the line KAVIAR branded glass tip. Their potency is slightly lower than their Moonrocks, but they still range 30-40% THC. Each of their cones are made up of 1.5 grams of kush.
The Kaviar Moonrocks are a lot like those of Atomik & Dr. Zodiaks. They are created with potent THC flower, infused with hash oil and rolled in kief. They describe their moonrocks as dense, potent and extra smooth. Kaviar Moonrocks have anywhere from 50-60% THC potency depending on each batch that is lab tested.
Kaviar products are both available in Colorado and California. If you’re looking to find out where you can pick up one of these tasty cannabis experiences check out the following dispensary Colorado & California locations.
Types of Moon Rock Products
As mentioned in the paragraphs above, you’ll find that these brands are developing a new range on Moon Rock products such as Moon Rock vape cartridges and pre-roll joints or cones.
Moon Rock Cartridges
Moon Rock cartridges are becoming more prevalent as the years go on. Right now the only real player in the Moon Rock cartridge space is the one and only Dr. Zodiak. But how could you blame Dr. Zodiak for not wanting to keep the brand alive along with providing a new high experience by tasting Moon Rocks in a vape cartridge?
Dr. Zodiak has a cartridge called Moonrock Clear which has been tested to have a THC content over 90%. Talk about getting your socks knocked off.
He has seven unique flavors or terpene-infused oils including; Hardcore OG, Strawberry, Banana, Original, Cotton Candy, Gelato and Razzle Dazzle.

Moon Rock Cones, Pre-roll Joints & Blunts
With the popularity of Moon Rocks taking off like a rocket, no pun intended, it was only a matter of time before new products came to the market, hence why there are now Moon Rock cones, pre-rolls and blunts available at a number of dispensaries in your state.
These types of rolled Moon Rocks products will have a slightly lower amount of THC content because they have to be mixed with flowers in some shape or form. This is understandable because Moon Rocks smoke a lot like hash, they burn very slowly. If you’ve ever smoked a hash joint before, you understand why it’s important to mix in a little herb.
However, with this being said, Dr. Zodiak has seemed to figure out how to keep the potency high. Dr. Z’s MoonRock Cones were tested up to 60% and his THC Ice Blunts hit 99% THC because they are mixed with pure THCa crystalline.
Moon Rock Prices: How Much Are They?
Good question! If we are talking about the brand name stuff: “Kurupt’s or Dr. Zodiak’s Moon Rocks” it doesn’t come cheap. The moon rocks weed price per gram is different depending on the state you are in and currently the average prices range $25-35 a gram, which is well over market value for a regular gram of weed. The average eighth of moon rocks (3.5 grams) is $100, which saves you around thirty dollars.
Of course, making moon rocks at home is definitely a cheaper option than buying by the gram.
How To Make Moon Rocks Weed
The wonderful thing about moon rocks is that any marijuana enthusiast with a little bit of ingenuity can make them, and they can make them for a whole lot less than the $35 a gram you would be spending at a dispensary.
Creating this gooey cannabis concoction is like crafting for adults. It’s fast, fun, and so easy a caveman could do it. Drop the glitter Barbara and pick up the kief because it is time to make some Moon Rocks at home.
Moon Rocks Ingredients:
- Big frosty nug or bud (one or two or three or four)
- Hash Oil / Concentrate
- Lots of kief
- Wood skewer
- Small bowl
- Paper plate
Save Your Kief
If you are like me, the fact that kief found its way on the ingredients list is really good news for you. Like most stoners, you have probably wondered what to do with kief as it accumulated in your stash bags and grinders. Well, if you have been saving it you are in luck because that decision pays off in a big bad way when it comes time to start making some moon rocks.
Conversely, if you haven’t been doing such a good job saving the stuff, it is never too late to start. Consider maintaining a designated jar or bag just for kief that you add to anytime you get a new bag of bud, or use your grinder. You should find that before long you have more than enough for this fun little stoney project.
Step-By-Step Instructions for Making Moon Rocks
STEP 1: Layout the best collection of primo kush you have.
It’s time to select a premium nugget that you would like to rockify. Pick your favorite and carefully add it to the end of the skewer.
STEP 2: Now it is time to bust out the hash or oil concentrate and place it in a small bowl.
Submerge the bud into the oil and distribute the amber-colored goodness all over the bud. Don’t stop until it is entirely covered.
STEP 3: Get your paper plate out and lay equally spread out the kief. Take the skewer of your oil-covered bud and roll the extra sticky flower around in kief.
4) Leave your precious Moon Rocks out to dry
If your chosen concentrate is something that needs a little warming to become viscous, heat it up until it becomes less solid and more liquid and either drip the concentrate all over your bud or dip it in the concentrate. Do not forget to use the tweezers or tongs to ensure cleanliness and less waste.
And by the way, you can never have too much kief! The more kief you can acquire for this process the better because you want this bud absolutely covered. Your nug will be totally unrecognizable at this point – that is GREAT!
How to Smoke Moon Rocks
Now, you might be wondering how to smoke moon rocks, but the fact of the matter is that it is pretty straightforward. It’s possible to roll blunts and joints of Moon Rocks like Kurupt and Dr. Zodiaks, but from experience, this is not the best way to smoke them.
Use Glassware or Pipes
You’re going to have the best experience smoking Moon Rocks from glass pieces; whether that’s a bong, steamroller or pipe, any of these will do.
Why? Because the mixture of kief and the gooey oil concentrate, moon rocks generally have trouble staying lit without a flame heating it up. With a glass, that’s not a problem because you can continue to suck and use the carb to your advantage. And that’s it. Pretty simple, huh? Be safe, and hit that.
Crumble it on top of a Bowl
Think of Moon Rocks as extremely potent little hash balls that you can throw on top of any bowl. Once you light your flower, this should get the little Moon Rock pieces hot enough to ignite and melt into your bowl.
Can I Handle Smoking Moon Rocks?
Moon Rocks sound incredible but it is probably not for the newbie. If you have never smoked weed before starting with Moon Rocks might not be the world’s greatest choice – not that I’m telling you what to do. By all means, stick your head in the dragon’s mouth if you are so inclined, but be prepared. That 50-60% THC level will really wreck you if you aren’t prepared for it.
The high is full-bodied and long-lasting. You truly feel like you have taken off on a rocket ship, floating in outer space. Moon Rocks is a great way to relax and give your endocannabinoid system a real treat. Make sure you smoke Moon Rocks out of glassware for the best possible flavor and outcome. This stuff is sticky and moist and rolling it in a joint or blunt MIGHT happen but it will not stay lit – so go with glass.
One more word of caution before you go out and find yourself some of this stuff: even Snoop Dogg says that Moon Rocks are too much.
That’s right, the world’s most famous stoner is of the opinion that moon rocks are just too strong. “Moon Rock is too much, dog,” Snoop told Charlamagne tha God on The Breakfast Club. “You don’t wanna start there. It’s too much for me.”
Now, of course, it kind of makes sense to want to try the weed that the king of pot said was too much for him. That makes sense, but don’t go into your smoking experience with any delusions of grandeur: if it’s too much for Snoop Dogg, it’s too much for you as well.
What’s Left? Time to Smoke the Weed Moon Rocks
Moon Rocks are a THC lovers paradise. Moon Rock weed may be one of the newer additions to the cannabis community but it is a very welcomed one! You may not have tried it yet, but at least now if you do, you will know what you are getting yourself into.
